Supernatural is super

I stumbled upon this gritty witch hunt-like series called “Supernatural” (WB) by accident and was drawn right into it. The mix of “Ghost Busters” like humor, the Eighties rock music, the forlorn brothers on a never ending road trip theme, eager to torch that bad ass demon that killed their mother Mary, is hard to resist and on top of it offers all the thrills and spills you’d expect from a series dabbling in ancient folklore, mysticism, demonolgy and the paranormal in general.

Phantom of the Opera (1989)

Phantom of the Opera (1989)What happens when Dwight H. Little tries to make “Phantom of the Opera” into a horror movie? Freddy Krueger is turning in his grave right now.

The Phantom (Robert Englund) haunts the London opera in search for – no, not music – no, not love – for fresh skin! You see, Freddy, I mean Erik Destler (of all names!) made a pact with the devil (not Freddy) and the devil granted Erik immortality through music and at the same time turned his face into goo, which is where the skin hunt comes in handy.

Dominion: Prequel to the Exorcist (2005)

Dominion: Prequel to the ExorcistDominion: Prequel to the Exorcist is the prequel as it was meant to be or so they say. Not having seen the prior version of the prequel I thought I might as well go with the “right” version. “The Exorcist” does not need an introduction and easily qualifies as one of the all time classic horror movies of our time. This prequel basically sets the stage for what is to come in the Exorcist and it does that in a very dull and cheap way.

The genre tag “drama” is probably the most fitting since there is hardly any thrill and certainly no horror involved in this version, except for a few scenes with red eyes and evil voice which rather seem comical than frightening. The effects are typically bad for a “no budget” production and only add to the comical effect, esp. the blue, red and green lights in the sky towards the end and a hovering budda like alien-devil is something where you usually switch off because you even stop laughing at that point.

The Descent (2005)

The Descent (2005)If you scare easily then you might not want to descend into that cave with those girls. It is pretty tense. Be warned. “The Descent” is a classic horror shocker from British director Neil Marshall, featuring an all girls group and their love for extreme sports, aka “No risk no fun”. It centers on two of the women, Sarah (Shauna Macdonald) and Juno (Natalie Jackson Mendoza), in a caving expedition that goes all wrong, the rest is just – as in all horror flicks – extras and their fate is clear from the beginning.

The movie starts slow and builds on the traumatizing car accident in which Sarah loses her husband Paul and daughter Jessica. One year later her five friends organize a caving expedition to help her get back to her old self. Sarah is still on heavy medication and has not overcome her loss. The six girls set out to explore a cave somewhere in the Appalachian mountains and that is where the movie unfolds its menacing claws and grabs you right at your throat and never lets go all through until the end.

The Brothers Grimm (2005)

Brothers Grimm (2005)The Brothers Grimm” is a silly movie. It has a certain pythonesque quality that you need to be able to appreciate otherwise you will most likely think it’s a stupid movie. It isn’t. There are of course countless references to Grimm fairy tales and sometimes these are presented in a most absurd manner – something you have to expect from Terry Gilliam and it’s something he delivers.

At one point we suddenly cut to the two brothers Wilhem (Matt Damon) and Jacob Grimm (Heath Ledger) wearing bonnets while scrubbing the floor and making dinner for their italian torture master Cavaldi (Peter Stormare), easy to spot as a reference to “Cinderella” but also very… “pythonesque”.
