You can find this year’s Oscar nominations here. I think Forest Whitaker will get the Oscar for Best Actor for his role as Idi Amin in “The Last King of Scotland“. For Best Actor in a supporting role my money is on Mark Wahlberg (The Departed).

The Departed (2006)

The Departed (2006)Martin Scorsese delivers with “The Departed” a superb thriller that leaves nothing to be desired. Scene of the crime: The Irish mafia against the FBI in present day Boston. Who wins? It wouldn’t be a Scorsese movie if it wouldn’t boil down to “organized crime doesn’t pay”.

I hear people say this is better than “Goodfellas“, is it? I’d say no, simply because it lacks the level of class “Goodfellas” had. “The Departed” is modern, it is crude, the story is secondary, it is merely about the good guys vs. the bad guys and that there are only losers and no winners in this whole circle of violence and corruption called “organized crime”.

The Illusionist (2006)

The Illusionist (2006)The Illusionist” (2006) tells the tale of true love lost at child’s age (or rather torn apart) and found again years later, saved by a net of illusions. What is real what is illusion? Eisenheim (Edward Norton) the Illusionist has mastered his art and comes back for the love of his life (Jessica Biel) years after and tries to rescue her from the clutches of Crown Prince Leopold (Rufus Sewell) which leads to her being murdered or is she?

Production values are top notch, costumes and make-up transport you right back to the Romatic Era of late 19th century Vienna. Disbelief is suspended for the time being. Rather than asking yourself “How does he do it” you keep asking yourself “Is it real?”.

Snakes on a Plane (2006)

Snakes on a Plane (2006)

Snakes on a Plane” (2006), dudes … holy smokes, what a crappy movie! Does Samuel L. Jackson have financial troubles or what? Seriously, crappy effects, totally crappy story, absolutely horrendous, ludicrous setting I mean … what on earth were they smoking?

This isn’t even a funny B-Movie type horror slasher, it’s just plain awful with no underlying wit or humor nor suspense nor horror unless you can’t stand snakes.

Honestly, why watch this movie other than to rant about how bad it was? The only remotley interesting thing I can say about this movie is tied to an imdb comment that reads “Goats on a Boat”.

Do yourself a favor and save your money on this one.

Threshold

ThresholdThreshold” was recommended to me by a friend. I never heard of the series before and I cannot share his views and must say that I completely understand why this series never saw a Season 2. We can blame the female government contingency analyst and her puppy for its failure!

The scenario is simple. Earth is being invaded by aliens through DNA mutation, i.e. exposed to a shape shifting alien probe that emits a certain frequency of sounds human DNA is altered and turned into an alien able to infect others. Granted, at first the pilot gets you interested in this whole alien invasion theme but the little novelty that is left soon wears off and then there’s really nothing left that would warrant viewing this show.

Not only is the lead role miscast the scripting on top of it is riddled with so many errors, loopholes, inconsistencies and ahorrent dialogue that the whole scenario for which she claims to have ultimate authority lends zero credibility and thus must disappoint on all accounts.

Season 1 was cancelled and taken off air and good riddance! Alternatively we could blame Brannon Braga for this one, too.
