Rome Season 3 Cancelled

It’s been known for a while now, Rome, another superb HBO show has been cancelled and will end after only 2 seasons. Main reasons: lack of viewers and too expensive. [ source ]

Granted, Rome was originally intended as a mere miniseries but spawned into a full series after the network saw the quality of the scripts. Unfortunately for HBO and any other network, viewer numbers are everything, esp. when the cost for the entire first season is around 100 million U$. We cannot really blame HBO when the viewers rather prefer crap over intelligent, quality TV series. If more people would have watched shows like Rome, Deadwood, Firefly, Invasion they would not have been cancelled, easy as that. Networks need to make profit and have to provide what the majority wants to see and if the majority wants to see crap then they have to give them crap. Besides, what network are you looking for when you want to watch quality shows? HBO, right?

Rome will end on March 25th 2007.

people must stop tuning to these damned reality shows and full house reruns and watch decent damn programming when it is offered!

They do not offer it much and if the fish dont bite right away its back to crap for the carp.

It isn’t so much people watching reality shows. I think it is that more people are watching over the net. I do so very often because I usually work doing my favorite shows and I suspect many people are doing the same. Their ratings aren’t going to show the honest amount of watchers.

Shame about the cancellation, That being said the story as it is perfectly lines it up for the brilliant I CLAUDIUS starring Derek Jacobi.

I do agree though that this kind of TV should be explored much more. There is not enough programming like this anymore.

Don’t forget that a lot of people like myself don’t watch the series as they come out one episode at a time, but wait until the whole Season comes out in a Box set. I just bought Season 1 and Season 2 of “Rome” and just finished watching them all and LOVE IT. I came on here to find out when season 3 would be available for purchase, and I AM VERY ******* that it isn’t being made! I stopped watching T.V. all together cause it’s 99% garbage years ago, unless something GREAT like ROME comes out, then I wait and buy the whole season. Rome is the Greatest, most addictive show I have seen yet. I was surprised when it turned out to be even better than Spartacus. I **** on all of you people who watch Garbage like “Housewife Hoes of Beverly Hills”, and get awesome, great quality shows like Rome Cancelled!

I agree! I just now finished watching the last episode and found the series to be fantastic! And I actually just went on line to check out when there’d be more episodes and found out this horrible news!
Oh well. Most people prefer Retard TV. You can’t change it so just be thankful we at least got two seasons of Rome.
Let the retards go back to watching “Stupid Biotch Wants to Be a Fashion Model” or other pathetic offerings.

Rome certainly was something out of the box, in acting and script. Clever use of everyday English in familiar spoken accents to suggest character made the more accessible (but not accessible enough, it seems). Giving the the criminal element east-London accents, for example, to convey a thuggish background is clever.
Equally, Rome avoided the usual “sword and sandals” pseudo-Shakespearian declaimation we suffered in the Steve Reeves type rubbish, as well as the constipated “my father’s English” of I Claudius. Well at least HBO, try to give us good entertainment.

I totally agree!! I live I live in the uk, and loved watching this series!! I do watch some reality things on t.v. like the X Factor and Britain’s and America’s Got Talent, but that is about it! I love watching dramas like Rome, The Tudors, Boardwalk Empire, True Blood ect… I think the t.v. companies should take into account all the people that watch programmes online and on their set top boxes, as I myself don’t always watch programmes when they are on, as I have too much to do sometimes, and havn’t got the time when it is being broadcast, but watch it when I DO have time. But the advertisers don’t like that, as you can fast forward all the ad breaks!! It is such a shame such fabulous series, that have intelligent and polished writing get scrapped, just because the t.v. companies want as much money as they can fill their boots with!!!!

I’ve always been a history freak particularly the mythologies of different cultures. I love the way this show portrayed things so much as they were without muddying it with modern values. Reality tv? Please, Roman reality was so much more interesting than the lame attempts at drama today’s ‘reality’ shows throw at us. No wonder I never watch tv anymore.

This was my favourite program, besides OZ!
I agree with everything said about viewers checking out reality television, when there are these wonderful drama’s to view!
There really is nothing left on television except reality crap and commercials which by the way are far too copious for words!

Oh HBO, or whoever please please bring back Rome season 3,4,5,6…..I’m sure there is enough material to base each episode on! I was hooked from the first episode. Great acting, amazing visuals, and a fantastic script. I’ve learnt so much history from watching this series and the thought of what was in store after each episode excited me. After only watching the first season I feel like I’ve developed a relationship with the characters and it feels like I’m having to break up with 10 people at once!!….the presence of Ciaran Hinds as Caesar, wow I felt vulnerable whilst he was on screen, felt Vorenus’s hurt at watching Pullo fighting to his death, admiration at Marc Anthony’s loyalty to his friend Caesar…..Not seen anything like this in a while and I almost want to put off watching the second season as I know it’s the end (as it stands now)…..Please… I beg, or I might have to stab myself (in true Rome style!!!)

780 notes with good comments about this impeccable series can’t be wrong. Amazingly detailed scenarios, brilliant dialogues and superb performances are a constant in ROME. Graphic scenes were justified to re-create the roman empire life. Casting, music, photography, cadence, editing, dresses…What else can be asked for? Well, a third season seems to be too much to ask. I’ll treasure the two seasons with my classic books, select music and award-winning movies.
    Kudos to the production team!

The most beautyful, exciting, dramatical and educational show I`ve ever laid eyes on. Imagine the excitement if we where to see it until the fall of Rome! So much more to tell about this epoke… I fell in love with the city and the people (especially gorgeous Pullo!!) Extremely facinating time, and to think this kind of intelligent civilization was all forgotten in the dark ages thanks to christianity. Im so sad and disappointed that I wont be seeing more of this lovely world.
I guess it was too intellectual for HBO wievers….
I cant believe the crew went through all this trouble making the beautyful set and costumes just for only two seasons. Tragic!!

I think if it wasn’t on HBO it would have done a whole lot better cuz most cable providers u have to pay to get HBO and most people are not gonna pay the money just so they can watch one thing from HBO. I love this series and im really pissed that its cancelled.

No, this is the problem! If a show doesn’t make money it get’s the chop. My favorite story is about the Beverley Hillbillies, although the show had very good ratings it was dropped when a survey told produces that the audience was either poor, or old. Who wants to sponsor a show where the audience has no money to buy your product? How can HBO go on financing shows if the audience is too small…it’s financial death by a thousand cuts.

Wow I have been waiting for a show like this to come out that keeps with the history, civilization, and has the set to back it up and topping it off with GREAT acting. We just started watching the show last week and after four years of trying to get my husband interested in Rome, I have finally succeeded, just to find out it was canceled after two season, how very sad!!!! I would sign any appeal that would put the show back on. My husband and I have never had HBO so we had no idea what was on it, is there anyway we could send an addendum to HBO to reconsider there cancellation of the series??? (Which of course would be very Roman if it could be put to a vote by the viewers and not have the verdict screwed with by the political powers that be, or would it be?)

Just watched Season 1 of ‘ROME’. Can’t believe I will only get to watch Season 2 then no more. HBO series are great. One reason I don’t bother with a new series these days is the frustration of getting involved in a storyline and characters that often gets cancelled too fast. If HBO had put the same amount time and money into promoting and advertising ‘ROME’ as it has with ‘True Blood’ and ‘Boardwalk Empire’ it would have been a hit. Thank you to all involved in the making of ‘ROME’.

I too have become absolutely hooked on the Rome series. Missed it on TV so my son bought on DVD for my birthday. Desperately sad because I’ve nearly finished watching, and so searched for the possibility of a season 3. According to my search a film is being made at the moment including the characters we love, Vorenus and Pullo. The marvellous actors who play these two have both given interviews confirming so, here’s hoping!!!

Just bought Rome series 1 and 2 on DVD. I was fairly young and more of a sci fi geek when rome came out the first time in 2005/2007. I will say I saw it in 2007 briefly and liked the look. I recently bought the DVDs and am gutted I only have 2 more episodes of series 2 to watch. This could have gone on to be epic. I guess TV is ultimately made to make a profit not for the hell of it. What a shame. I have heard rumors of a movie? Does anyone know anything else about a movie?

PS – HBO make some good TV. I loved the sopranos and also boardwalk empire is a decent show. Rome should have gotten more than 2 series.

I can not believe the stupidity of the generation I live in. I’m a only 17 years old but I found the history/drama of the rise and fall of the republic in this astounding show beyond compelling.and intrigued me from the very first episode. I know for a fact that the reports do not show true ratings as I watched all of the episodes on my EVO 4G. If people were actually looking for an intelligent plotline and a great cast of wonderful actors then this show would be through the roof. But instead modern society moves towards mindless drabble such as jersey shore and other unintelligible fake people making a quick buck for being so stupid beyond comprehension that people find it interesting and idolize these pitiful excuses for human beings. Sorry for ranting on like a pissed off teenager but that’s exactly what I am after hbo canceled a great series. Anyone who appreciates the complexity and ingeniously crafted play “Julius Caesar” by Shakespeare would absolutely love the series. Not exactly the same but very intriguing to compare these two great works of art nonetheless.

Anyhow I gues all we can do at this point is hope, and prey a movie does come out or even better simply PROMOTE the show as they do True Blood, and BoardWalk Empire and start seaon 3 now it maybe late however seems the majority of us would definitly watch without blinking…

I have really enjoyed this show. I put in some effort to see the whole of it since it was aired here, then taken off all of a sudden and then aired in the middle of the night without notice (the SBS concern seems to take pleasure in unairing my shows, so I get more and more recentfull of investing my time in watching a good show, but that is my frustration).
To HBO I would express my thanks at making this beautifull series and maybe, just maybe the succes of a Game of Thrones will reignite the flame of this more worldly political drama series.
