It’s been known for a while now, Rome, another superb HBO show has been cancelled and will end after only 2 seasons. Main reasons: lack of viewers and too expensive. [ source ]
Granted, Rome was originally intended as a mere miniseries but spawned into a full series after the network saw the quality of the scripts. Unfortunately for HBO and any other network, viewer numbers are everything, esp. when the cost for the entire first season is around 100 million U$. We cannot really blame HBO when the viewers rather prefer crap over intelligent, quality TV series. If more people would have watched shows like Rome, Deadwood, Firefly, Invasion they would not have been cancelled, easy as that. Networks need to make profit and have to provide what the majority wants to see and if the majority wants to see crap then they have to give them crap. Besides, what network are you looking for when you want to watch quality shows? HBO, right?
Rome will end on March 25th 2007.
A friend who purchased S1 and S2 on DVD leant me the discs for a week. What a spectacle! Like most, I jumped online to find out if i could rent season 3, only to as well find it canned. So sad, HBO. It seems the only successful shows on TV are the ones I can’t really stand. I don’t care who the next top model will be, I don’t care what drama Lohan or Spears is causing. I want my ROME!!!

i agree rome is the best series i have seen come out of hbo. and to end at such a time in its history is just painfull so much more to tell but dont wait for hbo there are many documentaries on rome and how augustus or octavian as he is called in the hbo series lived out his life and how he came to his end would have been great to see the series go onto some of the great leaders that followed him. vespasian a great leader of rome that would have been a great series the building of the fladium empatheater or as we know it the collusiam built the on rubble of neros vanity palace a place that brought a spectical of war right to the heart of rome for all to see ahhhh so much more to tell and never will be told now by hbo so so sad
i just watched rome on hbo ondemand and loved it,couldnt stop watching it intill i watched both series and its the only thing i have ever done that with!!! i like other shows on hbo but rome was great and im ready to cancel hbo intill it returns.
I Finished watching ROME, and let me tell you i fell in love with the cast. It is some worth watching. I’m just sad that there were only 2 season. I was hooked!!! and i will watch it again and again
I borrowed a copy of Season1 and Season2 off a friend and was hooked right away, after watching it all in only a few days i was quickly depressed to find such a fine show was cancelled and i was an addict without my next dose. it sucks that the mindless majority drains away all the potential for good stories and wastes its on shit reality tv.
If more people bought the DVDs rather than borrowing them HBO may have been able to afford to make series 3….
I concur paul , in the same boat loaned this set watched the first episode and was HOOKED and ended season 2 and was sad I WANT MORE —-i would settle for a book or even the script and me and my wife shall play the parts in are living room !!!!!

Sullen as I also feel over my “Rome”, content at least two series’ worth shall fill up my time when reading or other interests are not preferred on the moment. HBO shall continue to enlightening us all in the future I am certain.

It’ rather unfortunate, i saw a film with rome season 3 boldly written on it , i moved closer and saw Lusious Verinus picture on the case, what i don’t understand is that i know he was dead in season 2 , then how come he is the main character, who’s picture is on the case of season 3. thanks for the informtion that season 3 was cancilled.

Well, what most people dont understand is that MOST viewers ONLY have the basic package for their TV. I ONLY know about ROME because I got HBO after seeing ONE episode of the Pacific, the ON DEMAND feature was AWESOME so I could watch hour after hour.
I watched HUNG, got hooked and someone said “HA! You wanna see some crazy sex……watch ROME!” I have not seen season 2 yet.
I watched it and was hooked.
HBO maybe needs to do a better job of marketing. Remember when they had a month for free to get people over to see what they had.
Back in the day I had it……. OZ was my favorite show. Deadwood was also great.
I’ve been renting Rome from Netflix and this is the only show I care about right now. Great production, superb story line, outstanding casting and actors/characters. Such a shame show like this can’t go on due to cost. I don’t buy much DVDs but this is a show definitely worth keeping in your collection. Perhaps they can resume the season 3 in couple of years? With the same casting, though? I think each and every one of the actors/actresses owned their characters and would hate to the quality diminish, if they ever resume. I sincerely hope they do.
Hey everybody Rome will indeed come back for a Season 3 the director and Producer have agreed to make a season three end of 2011 or fall of 2012 not yet sure on the dates but there will finaly b another season to something fantastic il keep u posted if there is more news on it !

C’mon man! What are you trying to do? Get a riot started? HBO is a business. The business is to make money. If they tried to cater to every whim out there, they would be OUT of business very quickly. The actors have moved on to other pursuits, some have become very successful I might add. I was very hooked on ROME and watched each episode many times, but, one must understand that TV is a business. The reason there is so much mindless, “reality” crap on TV now is because it is cheap to produce and that is what sells. People are buying it. Simple economics. Want to find out what happened to Octavian and most of the others? Get a book on the history of Rome and read it. I know. Not as exciting as watching the battles and the character interaction and such, but it helps a little. Peace be upon you.

My son talked me into buying the 1st season, Of course when it was done, we quickly purchased the 2nd season as season 3 was listed several places. Much to my suprise & dismay when we completed season 2, & we eagerly went online to purchase season 3, the links all went to cancellation explanations.

I hope this kind of TV series existed when I was still studying European history in high school! I would have studied harder for this subject, it is a great show. Dramatically realistic stuff indeed! All these ancient peculiarities are so interesting, I have to watch every espisode twice since the subtitle cannot come together with the special footnote feature. Looking forward to the 3rd season.

I agree with most others, most shows out now are crap. Rome was awesome. Only other series I thought was just as captivating was Spartacus: Blood & Sand. Not for the faint of heart though. Anyhow, hope Rome returns.
There won’t be a season 3 of Rome, there is going to be a Rome Movie. You won’t have to wait until 2012 for another Rome picture, because they wrote a story line right after HBO cancled the series do to expence issues. They started shooting late November 2008, and finished the last scene 3 months ago (May 2010) So get ready to see the coming attractions on your TV early September 2010! It will be a 4 hour movie and if you loved the first two series, this Movie is going to blow you away! A Rome Movie Part Two is being written as we speak, it will begin as the last days of Octavian Caesar and the crowning of the second Emperor of Rome Tibirius, son of Ledia, Octavian’s Wife. Expect More Sex, more Drama and more War in this Film that will come in theaters in Late December 2012!

Hey Guys, I know we were all gutted when the wonderful ‘Rome’ series ended a few years ago(including the small but dedicated fan club here in New Zealand!), but a similar series called ‘Spartacus-Blood and Sand’ has just begun screening here and although it is hardly on the same level as ‘Rome’, it is very enjoyable and engrossing. a 3rd season would be great. but you have to figure,it takes a serious down turn with the characters, moving forward. i.e.the rise and fall of Caligula, Cluadius and the nympho-sex pot, Mesolina.all great & historically accurate. but does HBO want to comit to Rome’s conversion to christianity too? I say, if you’re truly going to tell the story,don’t half-step. it’s disenginuous. you can still keep it at the same level of quality without lowering the HBO standard. its not like you’re offending anyone.or profiling-ITS JUST DAMN GOOD TV! I pay my tv license and the only thing the BBC is worth these days was Rome and Attenborough and Hero’s which i might add fizzled into CRAP after season 1.
The £500,000 the BBC paid for each episode of Hero’s should have gone towards the future making of Rome Seasons 3,4,5.

Rome is one of the most juiciest, action packed, full of twists, intriguing, witty and drama filled show that is a master piece in itself. Nowdays our daily programming has been so tainted by superficial and nauseating wastes of brain cells, that a child of genius like Rome cannot even get a 3rd season? American ppl have forgotten what a truly great show is, and ” Rome ” is one of the greatest ever made. If a 3rd season will ever appear, I will throw my hands up to heaven and thank Jupiter for the gift, if not? Then Alas! I will die a wretch!

Im just now watching the second disc and got really hooked, i could easily enjoy two more seasons with a great wrap up of the fall of rome and maybe a hint at the Dark Ages coming. As for now I will enjoy my other Fav Eastdown and Bound!!!!

I loved both season 1 and 2, I watched both series on TV, and bought both series as soon as they were released on DVD. They are sitting waiting for season 3. I am saddened by the cancellation of Rome. It really was a great show. I don’t hold out much hope for it being brought back, but I do hope that a new series coming out won’t suffer a similar fate.
Game of Thrones promises to be a great series and I would hate to see it suffer the same fate as Rome.

I have been so taken by the quality of the script and the the presentations of the acting crew that I feel a sence of loss [still] at the series demise. Although the writers toos some lisence with the historical facts the production was incredible. Ocassionally I put the disk into bay and review, and, each time, I feel the same sentiment and excitement as I did at first. Thank you for the series and my gratitute to the staff and actors who gave us this wonderful showing.
I have seen a few epi of Rome and it looks good crap that there will be no season 3 and i hope what happened to Rome does not happen to The Walking Dead but it will after season 2

I just recently watched rome through Netflix and was surprised to find out there wouldn’t be a season 3. I think if the show was on FX for example it would of been seen by more people and maybe wouldn’t of been cancelled. I personally do not have HBO, however I would have it if Rome 3 was to be on again.
Dumb dumb executives. Just rewrite the script to use less expensive sets, once the viewer that are morons start to get it, they will follow it.
Besides the Christian Right did not like it, you put in the orgy scenes, allusion would have been better had they included some of the christian plights and killings for religious reasons, it would have garnered more. They love to see their persecution and no boobs, Guess they are clueless who watches it and why. Start with PG and ease them into the story. No need to have it so graphic on the sexual side, the christians leaning croud don’t mind killing people. They see that as normal.
Had the suits given this time, and had a better actor for Cessar, after Cessar the old was killed. The british accent was a throw off. A foreign actor would have been perfect.
Other than that it was a great series. All the other casting was excellent. Casting a British prick, no amount of lipstick will solve that. Still comes off as a British prick, and not a Roman prick. The prior actor was perfect, should have just aged him. The new guy was a blunder and not believable.
I got ROME series 1 and 2 as a gift for Christmas 2010. I love all things egyptian and when I finished season 1 I was hooked!! I loved the story line and was on the edge of my seat. I watched most of season 1 at one sitting. I was bumbed out when caesar died. I couldn’t wait for to see season 2. After season 2 I looked all over for Season 3 but found out that the show was cancelled after only 2 seasons. Bummer!! I can’t understand it…it was a terrific show. However, the quality of the show and the way it was put together…you can see that it cost alot of money to make.
I read about Rome as a movie years ago. I bought first season and that’s how began my addiction. I was waiting for another season over a YEAR!!! I had to buy another one. I knew that it was a expensive thing for the producers, co I felt that by buing it I can give my respect to dose who made it, and I can contribute to make another parts. Unfortunately it didn’t help….
We need more historical content. Too many cheap reality shows is eating away at the very essence of theatre and acting. I look at the actors in Rome and unfortunatly no one has seemed to kicked on to bigger things. Instead we have kim Kardashian or Paris, WTF!!. There will never be a series 3 but people should push for less reality.

Things have come to a pretty pass where shows that dwell on the minds of “early” intelligence can represent the majority of the audience for HBO. When i first watched Rome on Foxtel’s demand channel i was hooked and for the best part of 4 years i have not been able to think of much else. Sure similar shows have been set on Roman times ‘spartacus’ (which is a well thought-out in depth depiction on Romes brutality regarding events at a time in equal turmoil is worth a watch also), but i believe Rome was just starting to catch on amoung a growing fan base. As is with many TV shows, audiences sky-rocket on the up and up, the HBO exectutives just needed to have this thought in mind when considering season 3 and be more patient in it’s profitability. Its a shame that this idea wasn’t advertised and considered more before deliberating on a verdict that has left many loyal fans shocked and somewhat resentful of HBO’s inability to see its potential as a real revenue making TV series that would go on to win countless awards.

My husband and I just saw season 1 and 2, and looked on internet for season 3. And found out it was canceled. Very frustrating. We are history buffs and really enjoyed the series and features episodes, giving us so many facts. Please reconsider! I think that it would be a huge success if it was bought by the History Channel. Very poor advertising! We had never heard about this series until a couple weeks ago. Do reruns and maybe people will see qualitiy acting, incredible scenes and learn a little history. Loved the cast! And I agree, I preferred the 1st Octavian (heir son of Ceasar).

While not quite the level of Rome, you might all try the Spartacus series. Not as monumental, but certainly engaging.
Also, the Pillars of the earth mini series based on the book is quite riveting as well, and also a great period piece.

OMG! I can not believe that this show would be scrapped after only 2 short seasons. This is a show that would bring me home at night . I don’t watch the soaps like the other chic’s I know. This is a show that I could watch with my bothers and sisters and bring us as close as any other family .

I have totally cancled HBO from my life and so have most of my family through out the states because of shows being cancled. They get you hooked then cut the cord, at least give it a good ending then be off with it.

i just finished watching 1 and 2 this weekend, in fact i watched 2 in less then 24 hours. It is one of the best TV series that this centuray has seen in a while. It’s historical truth is not only facinating and intreging to the viewer but the characetrs are both relatable and unique. When i found out there was no season 3 i almost died, I’m on 16 and althrough 90% of my friends enjoy the relaity crap found on MTV i dont. BRING BACK ROME
