Madagascar (2005)

Madagascar (2005)I heard a lot of good things about “Madagascar” but I had my doubts though and rightly so. It’s all well made and such. The animation is cartoon like with enough details to make it look good. The characters are not too interesting and the two monkeys are the funniest of the bunch but they have next to no screen time. The penguins are the key element and the driving force that kicks the whole “break out” story in motion. Again they have next to no screen time. Instead we get the thumb sucking lion Alex (voice: Ben Stiller), the neurotic giraffe Melman, the manic-depressive zebra Marty (voice: Chris Rock) and the motherly hippo Gloria.
There are a few jokes and amusing scenes but not enough to make this a hilarious fun ride. Once you meet the lemurs and the lemurs meet the pansies the movie is practically over, were it not for the returning penguins.

The Descent (2005)

The Descent (2005)If you scare easily then you might not want to descend into that cave with those girls. It is pretty tense. Be warned. “The Descent” is a classic horror shocker from British director Neil Marshall, featuring an all girls group and their love for extreme sports, aka “No risk no fun”. It centers on two of the women, Sarah (Shauna Macdonald) and Juno (Natalie Jackson Mendoza), in a caving expedition that goes all wrong, the rest is just – as in all horror flicks – extras and their fate is clear from the beginning.

The movie starts slow and builds on the traumatizing car accident in which Sarah loses her husband Paul and daughter Jessica. One year later her five friends organize a caving expedition to help her get back to her old self. Sarah is still on heavy medication and has not overcome her loss. The six girls set out to explore a cave somewhere in the Appalachian mountains and that is where the movie unfolds its menacing claws and grabs you right at your throat and never lets go all through until the end.

Dark City – Director’s Cut DVD in 2006!

If you haven’t seen “Dark City” then you might hold off just a little longer. This splendid dystopian Sci-Fi flic was underrated and butchered when it came out on DVD (R2 version) and I am more than delighted to say that there will be a Director’s Cut version out in 2006. I am very much looking forward to following Murdoch (Rufus Sewell) around once more to uncover the truth about Dark City. Keep an eye on Proyas’ official site for more news.

Match Point (2005)

Match Point (2005)Woody Allen is back in the game and he has a “Match Point” in this one. Chris (Jonathan Rhys-Meyers), a young man who wants to make something out of his life, quits his professional tennis player career, becomes a tennis instructor and quickly moves on once he meets Tom (Matthew Goode) and his sister Chloe (Emily Mortimer). Chris starts dating Chloe but is secretly in love with Tom’s fiancée Nola (Scarlett Johansson). Torn between a posh upper-class lifestyle with all its luxury and his lust for Nola, Chris is contemplating his possibilities to have both and give up neither. A lot of it depends on chance as the movie points out in the very beginning with an analogy to a tennis ball hitting the net. Whether you lose or win depends on where the ball will land: pure chance – the movie’s main theme.
